Vale John GilesCARMA stalwart John Giles passed away on 30th December 2024, one day short of his 91st birthday. John had a deeply significance influence on Australian Mathematics, on Mathematics at the University of Newcastle (where his long influence included being Head of School), and indirectly in the formation of CARMA. John supervised Brailey Sims, who was instrumental in bringing Jon Borwein to Newcastle.Below is the message shared by the AustMS last week, which includes funeral details.

Dear Members
We are saddened to report that John Giles, one of the pioneers of functional analysis in Australia, passed away last Monday, one day shy of his 91st birthday.
He had been an AustMS member since 1960.
He served the University of Newcastle for many years, completing his PhD there in 1969, and supervising seven PhD students.
He also served on the AustMS Council 1978-82, 1985-86 and 1989-92.
He was Vice President of AustMS 1982-84 and Editor of the Gazette 2001-03.
The funeral is planned for Wednesday 22nd January at eleven in the morning.
It is expected to be held at Christ Church Cathedral in Newcastle and then afterwards at the Hippocrates Hall.
