    More discovery grant success for CARMA members

    Congratulations are also due to CARMA members Stephan Chalup and David Pontin for their success in the ARC's Discovery Projects 2021 grant round.

    Stephan and colleagues were funded for two projects, "Estimating the Topology of Low-Dimensional Data Using Deep Neural Networks" and "Novel Techniques for Uncoordinated Massive Access in the Internet of Things", while David and his collaborators were awarded funding for "Understanding the sources of the slow solar wind".

    DECRA success for Stephan Tornier
    Congratulations to CARMA member Stephan Tornier on the awarding of a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (one of 4 given at UoN), with funding of over $400,000. His project is on "effective classification of closed vertex-transitive groups acting on trees". With a success rate of only 17%, this award is highly competitive. Well done Stephan!

    CTAC2020: Fillipe Georgiou wins Best Student Presentation
    CARMA PhD student Fillipe Georgiou has been awarded the "best student presentation" award at the 2020 Computational Techniques and Applications Conference. This conference provides a forum for researchers interested in the development and use of computational methods applied to engineering, scientific and other problems. Congratulations Fillipe!

    On 18th July 2020, CARMA mathematician Bishnu Lamichhane gave a talk to the Nepalese Mathematics Society on "My Research Journey in Mathematics".

    George Willis at the Children's University

    Laureate Prof. George Willis has recorded a 10-minute video, "The mathematics of symmetry", for the Children's University describing his work on symmetry. The target audience is 7 to 14 years of age.

    New book of papers devoted to memory of Jonathan Borwein

    The proceedings of the Jonathan M. Borwein Commemorative Conference have been published. From Analysis to Visualization: A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Jonathan M. Borwein is a compilation of research papers devoted to Jon's memory, and a synopsis is available here.

    The volume has been published by Springer, and is available for purchase from the Springer website, or from Amazon.com.

    Mike Meylan wins Cherry Ripe Prize!
    CARMA's Mike Meylan jointly won the Cherry Ripe Prize, along with with Prof. Peter Taylor from the University of Melbourne, at this year's ANZIAM conference. The prize is awarded to the best presentation by an established academic voted by students.

    CARMA advisor Tony Guttmann appointed to Order of Australia
    Congratulations are due to Professor Tony Guttmann, a member of CARMA's external advisory committee since its founding, who was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in this year's Australia Day honours. Professor Guttmann was honoured for his significant service to the mathematical sciences and to education. Read the AMSI press release here.
